The Thrill of it All

If you're a regular visitor to the blog, you may have noticed the new addition on the left sidebar called "Baby Polka", a tracker from Lilypie.comThat's right, Internet peeps, Matt and I are expecting our first child!  The tracker will let everyone keep up with how far along we are and how many days we got left until "blast off"!  Below is a copy of the letter we sent out to our friends and family on June 29th, in case you're interested in reading it, and there will be more details along the way, so stay tuned!

Life is full of surprises.  Big ones and little ones.  We discovered a surprise of our own the night that Matt's sister, Kim, went into labor with our nephew, Jadon.  Our dismay at the sight of a positive pregnancy test is still wearing off!  That's right, we are expecting our first little one!  We are currently 12 weeks and 2 days along, with a due date of January 9, 2009.

Interestingly, when reflecting upon that day of discovery and the months that have followed, the phrase that comes to mind is "shock and awe."  That first night truly had us in shock (we've got the pictures to prove it!), and reading about this little one's heart beginning to beat, organs forming, bones hardening, and seeing an apparent hand-wave at our last ultrasound has us in awe of God's handiwork.  We have a feeling the shock and awe will only continue :-)

We've had two doctor's appointments and everything looks great, which we're very thankful for and pray it continues.  Meg has had some nausea and a lot of exhaustion, and Matt is looking forward to discovering how toys have improved in three decades.  For those who keep up with Meg’s blog, you now know why the doctor in Ireland couldn't help her…she couldn't take diddly-squat to feel better, or why she hasn’t resumed her half-marathon training, or why she needs longer naps these days.  Our next appointment is in August and, unlike most parents, we're going to try to wait until after the baby is born to find out the gender (so be patient!).  Until then, we have given the baby the nickname "Polka", as in "polka-dot".  Polka cupcakes Our dog, Molly, is hoping Polka is another puppy.  We haven't had the heart to tell her Polka is human.

A big "thank you" to our parents and siblings for keeping mum about this much longer than they would've liked!  They are biting at the bit to talk about it amongst friends and family...and now they can be unleashed!

Our journey has been one of ups and downs as we have struggled with infertility, talked about adoption, and wrestled with confusion over even if we wanted children.  But we are thankful that God is the One who weaves our story together and that we can trust Him with all the "surprises" that we will encounter on this adventure.  We are also so thankful to be blessed by a community of family and friends such as yourselves and are willing to talk about our experiences with you.  Also, now that the word is out, Meghan is looking forward to sharing more about our past, present, and future journey on her blog, Spicy Magnolia, in case you'd like to follow along with us online.

Thank you for celebrating this exciting surprise of ours with us!  We love you all!

Matt, Meghan, Polka, & Molly
